Antique Clough & Warren Pump Organ in full working order in Muir of Ord, Highland for sale

Antique Clough & Warren Pump Organ in full working

This lovely pump organ needs a new home. Can you help? Clough & Warren pump organ made in their Detroit factory, Mitchigan, USA. It was originally imported and sold by Chappell & Co. of London. The Serial Number inside the body of organ (92196) dates the organ’s manufacture as 1890. It measures 122 cm high, 113 cm wide at the widest point and 37 cm deep (front to back) at widest point. The wood is probably American oak and has been polished to a warm glow. Included is a solid wood, specialized mahogany stool with sloping seat. There is inlaid carving on the sides of the organ and in the knee area. It is operated via pumping of large foot pedals which forces air across a bank of reeds. Organs like this, built in the last quarter of the C19th were some of the most elaborate and lavish instruments money could buy before pianos took over as popular keyboard instruments. The comparatively low height of this organ would suggest that it was designed as a chapel organ – they were low enough to let the organist see the choir or congregation. However, unlike most chapel organs this does not have an ornate back so it may have in fact been a‘parlour’ organ for domestic use in the home. This instrument has been in the same family for at least 65+ years. During that time it has been kept in a house (as opposed to a garage or outbuilding) and played by pianists/organists – both factors have contributed to its good condition and the fact that it is in full working order (unusual for an organ of this age). The pedals pump; the (original) keys and knee paddles (for ‘loud/quiet’ effects) work. For this type of organ, it has more than the unusual number of stops – 16 in total - and someone who knows how to use these to effect can produce a varied and majestic sound from this instrument. The fabric backing to the fretwork panels is excellent for letting the rich sound emerge. There are some scratches and wear to the wood in places but nothing more than you would expect for something 124 years old. At some point in its life the instrument has been in the possession of Logan & Company of Inverness, Elgin and Aberdeen (Scotland) - see picture. Just about hiding that label is an added shelf to support music. This shelf, whilst useful, is not an original feature. It is held down by 4 screws so could be removed and the area beneath which is slightly damaged ‘made good’ if desired. The upper back panel of the organ should have two hooks holding it in place but one is missing – an easy fix. There may once have been handles on the side but these have been removed. The innards of the organ would benefit from some sensitive cleaning and some of the keys are slightly ‘sticky’ but again, this is something an expert could address. There is a pile of vintage/antique organ/harmonium music included. It is a mixture of instructional books, voluntaries and other. Some dates back to early C20th (eg 1909). Can provide list if wished. Can also provide more detailed pictures of anything as required. Here is a list of the stops.
